Cold and heat treatments are both commonly used and the best non-medicated, natural means to treat pain and injuries. But how do you know whether to use cold or heat to treat pain?
The main rule of thumb is if the location to treat is red/ swollen/ inflamed- it should be treated with cold. Similarly, cold should also be used for acute pain. Heat or warm treatments, on the other hand, can be used to relieve non-acute pain or to prepare the body for movement.
Different temperatures are used for various injuries and pains, because they have different impacts. Cold treatments numb sore nerve endings, reduce swellings and relieve inflammations. Heat treatments assist relaxation, accelerate the circulation, and improve tissue elasticity.
